For most teens, the teeth can be treated either way. The choice turns on the teenager: habits, schedule, sports, and how much they want the aligners themselves. Here is the honest comparison, followed by a test.
Where aligners win
- Appearance. Often the whole reason a teen asks.
- Eating anything, with no broken brackets.
- Easier brushing and flossing, and lower risk of the white marks that poor brushing around brackets leaves.
- Contact sports: no brackets to cut lips; aligners fit under a mouthguard.
- Wind and brass instruments.
- Fewer in-person visits with remote monitoring.
Where braces win
- They work whether or not the teen remembers them. No wear-time anxiety for parents.
- Complex movements: large rotations, vertical corrections, impacted teeth, extraction cases.
- Nothing to lose. A lost aligner is a phone call and a delay; a bracket is always there.
- Coloured ties, which some younger teens like.
- Metal braces are the least expensive option.
What goes wrong with each
Aligners: wear time under 20 hours, aligners thrown out with lunch, and the plan drifting so refinements multiply and treatment runs months long. Braces: broken brackets from hard foods, poor brushing leaving permanent white marks, and missed adjustment visits.

The test
Before choosing aligners, have your teen wear a sports mouthguard or an old retainer at home for two weeks, in and out for meals, for as many hours as possible. If it is in their pocket by day three, choose braces and save everyone the stress. If they manage it, aligners are a reasonable bet. Clear ceramic braces on the upper teeth are the middle path for a teen who wants discretion without the compliance question.
Let the teen decide, within limits
Teens who choose their own appliance tend to look after it. Give them the real trade-offs and let them pick, unless the orthodontist has said the case needs braces, in which case the decision is made.
