Braces vs Invisalign: the full comparison
Both work. Here is what actually decides between them.

This is the comparison people ask for most, and the honest answer is that both work well when used for the right case and the right patient. What follows is a side-by-side across the things that actually decide the choice.
| Braces | Invisalign / clear aligners | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Visible; ceramic brackets reduce it | Nearly invisible; attachments faintly visible up close |
| Depends on patient wearing it | No; works 24 hours a day | Yes; needs 20 to 22 hours daily |
| Best suited to | Severe rotations, vertical movements, extraction cases, impacted teeth, complex bites | Crowding, spacing, many bite problems, relapse cases, adults |
| Eating | Avoid hard, sticky, crunchy foods | Eat anything; remove aligners first, rinse or brush before replacing |
| Cleaning | Harder; risk of white marks if brushing is poor | Normal brushing and flossing; aligners must be cleaned too |
| Comfort | Tender after adjustments; brackets can irritate cheeks | Pressure with each new aligner; no brackets or wires |
| Visits | Every 6 to 10 weeks, in person | Every 8 to 10 weeks, with remote monitoring between |
| Emergencies | Broken brackets, poking wires | Lost or cracked aligners, lost attachments |
| Sports and instruments | Mouthguard needed; lip cuts possible | Aligners fit under a mouthguard; easier for wind players |
| Treatment time | 12 to 24 months comprehensive | Similar for comparable cases; short for simple cases; longer if wear is poor |
| Cost at a specialist office | Roughly $5,000 to $9,000 comprehensive; metal least expensive | Similar for comparable cases; less for limited treatment |
| Retainers afterward | Required, for life | Required, for life |
How an orthodontist actually decides
Three questions, in order. First, can this problem be corrected predictably with aligners? Most can; some cannot, and for those the recommendation is braces regardless of preference. Second, will this patient wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day for a year or more? If the honest answer is no, braces will produce a better result with less stress. Third, given both would work, which does the patient prefer? Only at this third step does appearance decide.
Sometimes the answer is both: a few months of braces to do the difficult movements, then aligners to finish. And for some teens the answer is clear braces on the upper teeth, which gets most of the discretion of aligners without the compliance question.
Common misunderstandings
- "Invisalign is faster." For simple cases, yes. For comparable comprehensive cases the timelines are similar, and poor wear makes aligners slower.
- "Invisalign is more expensive." Not at most specialist offices for comparable cases.
- "Braces are for kids, Invisalign is for adults." Both are used across all ages. Invisalign First treats children as young as 7; adults choose braces for complex cases.
- "Aligners cannot fix bites." Modern aligner planning corrects many overbites, underbites and crossbites, especially in growing patients.
