Invisalign: how it works and whether it will work for you

Invisalign is a system of clear, removable plastic aligners that move teeth in small steps. Each aligner is worn for about a week, then swapped for the next in the series. It is made by Align Technology and is the most widely used clear aligner system in Canada, but it is a tool, not a treatment plan. The result depends on the diagnosis and on the person planning the tooth movements, which is why the same product can produce very different outcomes at different offices.

How Invisalign treatment works at a specialist office

1. Records. A digital scan of the teeth, photographs and x-rays. At myORTHODONTIST Maple Ridge these are taken at the complimentary evaluation.
2. The plan. The orthodontist designs the movements on a 3D model, tooth by tooth, including which teeth move first and how much force each aligner applies. This is the step that separates a specialist result from a template.
3. Attachments. Small tooth-coloured bumps are bonded to some teeth to give the aligner something to push against. Almost every case needs them. They come off at the end.
4. Wear. Aligners stay in 20 to 22 hours a day, out only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing. Check-ins are every 6 to 10 weeks, often with remote monitoring in between.
5. Refinement. Teeth rarely track perfectly. Most cases need one round of additional aligners near the end to finish the details. At this clinic refinements are included in the fee.
6. Retainers. The last aligner is not the last step. Retainers hold the result and are worn full time at first, then nightly.

What Invisalign can and cannot do

Modern aligners, planned well, correct crowding, spacing, many overbites and underbites, crossbites and open bites. They are also used in children as young as 6 or 7 (Invisalign First) to widen arches and guide growth.

They are less predictable for a few movements: rotating round teeth such as canines and premolars, moving teeth vertically, and closing large extraction spaces. Severe skeletal problems in adults may need jaw surgery regardless of appliance. When a case sits in that territory, the honest recommendation is often braces, or a combination: braces for a few months to do the hard movements, then aligners to finish.

What treatment feels like

New aligners are tight for the first day or two; most people describe pressure rather than pain, managed with acetaminophen if needed. Speech is slightly affected for a few days. Attachments feel rough to the tongue for about a week. After that, most patients say they forget the aligners are in, which is the point.

Eating and drinking: everything comes out except the aligners for water. Coffee, tea and red wine stain aligners and attachments, so they are removed first. Brush or at least rinse before putting aligners back to avoid trapping sugar against the teeth.

How long it takes

Cost
