Invisalign for teens

Teenagers are the largest group of orthodontic patients and the group for whom the braces-or-aligners decision is hardest, because the answer depends less on the teeth and more on the teenager. Is my teen a candidate?

Clinically, most teen cases can be treated with aligners, including crowding, spacing, overbites and many bite problems. The two real questions are:

1. Have enough adult teeth come in? Aligners need something to hold onto. Invisalign Teen includes eruption tabs that leave room for teeth still coming in, so treatment can start around age 11 to 13 in many cases, but the orthodontist will judge this from the x-ray.
2. Will the aligners actually be worn? 20 to 22 hours a day, every day, for a year or more. Not most days. Every day.

The honest compliance conversation

The ones who do well with aligners tend to share a few traits: they wanted aligners themselves rather than having a parent choose for them, they already keep track of their own things (phone, retainer from a previous phase, sports gear), and they eat at reasonably regular times. The ones who struggle are often the ones who are busiest: multiple sports, jobs, long days where the aligners come out at lunch and stay out.

Invisalign Teen aligners have small blue indicator dots that fade with wear, which lets parents and the orthodontist see roughly how much wear is happening. Aligners and teen life

Sports: aligners can be worn under a mouthguard in most sports, and unlike braces there are no brackets to cut lips. For contact sports, some athletes prefer to remove aligners and wear a regular mouthguard during play; that time counts against the 20 hours.

Music: woodwind and brass players usually adapt to aligners within a couple of weeks, and many find aligners easier than braces.

Eating: anything, as long as aligners come out first and teeth are brushed or at least rinsed before they go back in. Snacking all day is the enemy, because every snack is 20 minutes of no wear plus a rinse.

Photos and confidence: this is often the real reason a teen wants aligners, and it is a legitimate one. Clear braces are a middle option worth knowing about.

How long, and what it costs

Comprehensive teen treatment with aligners commonly runs 12 to 24 months, with a refinement round near the end.
