In British Columbia, you do not need a referral from a dentist or physician to see a certified specialist in orthodontics. You can call and book an evaluation directly, at any age, for yourself or your child. Insurance plans in BC do not require a referral for orthodontic benefits either.
Why people think they need one
Medical specialists in BC generally do require a physician's referral, and many people assume dental specialists work the same way. They do not. Orthodontists, like other dental specialists, accept patients directly. Referrals from dentists are common and welcome, because dentists notice problems early, but they are a courtesy between colleagues, not a gate.
What your dentist's role is
Your dentist remains your primary oral health provider throughout orthodontic treatment. Cleanings and check-ups continue, more often for braces patients, because plaque around brackets is the main cause of the white marks that can follow treatment. Any cavities or gum problems are treated by your dentist before or during orthodontics. The clinic sends your dentist a report at the start of treatment and updates as needed, and coordinates timing when restorative work such as crowns or implants is planned around tooth movement.
If your dentist has suggested orthodontics
Ask them what they noticed, and bring their note or x-rays if you have them; recent x-rays can save taking new ones. If you do not have a dentist
You can still be seen. The orthodontist will recommend establishing care with a general dentist before treatment starts so that cleanings and any needed dental work are handled.
