The structure
At myORTHODONTIST Maple Ridge the fee is quoted in full at the evaluation. Most families pay an initial amount when treatment starts and spread the balance in equal monthly instalments across the treatment period, interest free. The plan runs through the clinic, not a lender, so there is no credit application and no interest.
A worked example
Illustration only, using round numbers. Treatment fee $6,000. Insurance pre-determined at $1,500, billed directly. Balance $4,500. Initial payment $1,000 at the start. Remaining $3,500 over 20 months is $175 a month.
How insurance fits
Insurance is estimated before treatment and billed directly as the insurer pays, which may be in instalments. Your monthly amount is based on the expected balance after insurance. If the insurer pays less than estimated, the difference is yours; ask how that is handled.
What to ask about any payment plan
- Is it interest free? Are there administration fees?
- Is it through the clinic or a third-party lender with a credit check?
- How many months? Can it extend beyond the treatment length?
- What is the initial payment, and can it be smaller for a longer plan?
- What happens if treatment runs longer than planned?
- Is there a discount for paying in full?
Third-party financing
Some offices use outside dental financing companies. These involve a credit application and often interest after a promotional period. They can be useful for people who want a longer term than the clinic offers, but read the terms; a "no interest for 12 months" plan can charge retroactive interest if the balance is not cleared.
Other ways to reduce the cost
Health spending accounts, the medical expense tax credit on your return, coordination of two parents' plans, and treating siblings together. See insurance in BC and cost and insurance.
