What moves the price

• Complexity. Extractions, impacted teeth, significant bite correction and surgical cases take longer and cost more.
• Appliance. Metal braces are the least expensive; ceramic, lingual and aligners cost more to produce.
• Duration. Longer treatment means more visits and more aligners.
• Scope. Aligning the front teeth only costs less than correcting the whole bite.
• What is included. Two quotes that look different may be the same once retainers, refinements and follow-up are added to the cheaper one.

What insurance pays in BC

MSP: nothing, outside hospital cleft and surgical programs. Employer plans with orthodontic coverage: commonly 50 percent to a lifetime maximum of $1,500 to $3,000 per person, sometimes children only. Comparing quotes fairly

Ask every office the same questions: Does the fee include retainers and the first year of retainer checks? Are refinements or extra aligners included? What happens to the fee if treatment runs long? Is the person treating me a certified specialist? What are we correcting, the whole bite or the front teeth? A lower number that answers those questions differently is not a lower price.
